Outdoor & Sports

Camping, hiking, cycling, and lighting. Chinese outdoor brands have gone from making other people's gear to designing their own, and in ultralight camping and bike lighting they are now the value benchmark. Waterproofing claims and battery safety are the two things to scrutinise.

Outdoor gear across borders

Waterproof ratings are frequently overstated. Look for a hydrostatic head figure in millimetres rather than the word "waterproof". A believable spec sheet beats a marketing badge.

Battery safety on lights and power stations. Lithium cells shipped internationally should carry UN38.3 transport certification. For power stations, also check destination-market grid compatibility and plug type.

Weight claims are usually accurate but optimistically measured. Check whether the stated weight includes the stuff sack, poles, and pegs.

Spare parts for tents and poles. A pole is the most common failure and the hardest part to source locally. Brands that sell replacement pole sections are worth a premium.

Season rating vs your actual use. A three-season sleeping bag rated to -5°C is a comfort rating, not a survival rating, and ratings assume a mat you probably do not own. Buy warmer than the number suggests.
