Consumer Electronics

This is the category where Chinese brands are genuinely world-leading rather than merely cheap. Charging, audio, robot vacuums, action cameras, drones, and 3D printers are all sectors where a Shenzhen or Dongguan company sets the global benchmark. The catch is certification and after-sales: a grey-import unit can be identical hardware with no warranty coverage where you live.

Buying electronics direct from China without getting burned

Certification is the first filter. For anything mains-powered or with a radio, look for the destination-market mark: CE/UKCA in Europe, FCC in the US, and a real local plug. A brand that publishes its certificate IDs is a brand that expects to be held accountable.

Warranty geography matters more than warranty length. "24-month warranty" means nothing if service requires shipping to Shenzhen. Check whether the brand has a regional service centre or a local distributor that honours warranty claims.

Firmware support is the hidden spec. Ask how long the product gets updates. Cheap hardware with abandoned firmware becomes e-waste in eighteen months; good brands publish an update history.

Regulatory risk on radio gear. Battery capacity, radio power, and frequency bands are legally restricted in ways that vary by country. A unit sold worldwide may not be compliant where you are.

Avoid unbranded clones. If a listing has no manufacturer name, no certificate, and no support address, you have no recourse and no way to judge safety. That is a different product category from a budget brand with a real company behind it.
